The answer

The reported by Tirmidhi and Tabari from Adi ibn Hatim states that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered Adi to remove a gold cross he was wearing around his neck. He then recited the verse: "They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah." When Adi objected, saying that they did not worship them, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, clarified that prohibiting what Allah has made lawful and making lawful what He has forbidden constitutes their worship. Tirmidhi weakened this Hadith, but Ibn Taymiyyah and Al-Albani declared it to be (good). Adi's statement, "Indeed, we do not worship them," may be used as evidence for the ignorance of some Arabs regarding the meaning of lawful worship, as the meanings of legal terms may differ from linguistic meanings by way of addition or restriction, and a person may overlook the correct meaning due to tradition or habit.
