What is the ruling on one who guffawed during the Maghrib prayer while being led, and does the Imam bear his sin?
Whoever guffaws during prayer, their prayer is invalidated. According to the majority of scholars, their ablution is not nullified, but it is recommended for them to perform ablution. This differs from the Hanafis, who believe that guffawing invalidates both ablution and prayer. If the guffaw was involuntary, the person is not sinful. However, if they did it intentionally, they are sinful and must repent. The Maliki school makes an exception if the congregant laughs involuntarily or forgetfully and is able to complete the prayer behind the Imam, provided four conditions are met.
