How can a balance be struck between the wife's right to an independent home and the duty to care for elderly parents, as indicated by the verse, "whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you"?

Allah has commanded kindness and honor towards parents. Part of this kindness is speaking to them gently and caring for them, especially in their old age, and not showing annoyance or exasperation towards them. Among their rights is providing them with suitable housing. If it is not possible for the wife and parents to live in the same house, then the wife has the right to her own separate dwelling. Therefore, the husband can house his parents in a suitable dwelling and oversee their care. If this is not possible and it leads to the neglect of their rights, then he must reside with his parents. If the wife chooses to live with him under these circumstances, she may do so. If she refuses, he should separate from her, prioritizing the rights of his parents.
