What are the conditions for leading the prayer (Imamah)?

The prayer behind someone ignorant of the detailed rules of prayer is valid if he knows its general form and it is free from defects, though it is disliked to appoint him as imam initially. Similarly, the imamate of a less virtuous person is permissible even if a more virtuous one is present.
