What should I do in this situation, and what is the Sharia ruling on retrieving gifts and the financial amount, if I withdraw from the engagement due to the girl enrolling in university to complete her studies against our prior agreement, and under duress from her father?

If a man proposes to a woman and stipulates that she should not study or work, this condition must be adhered to, whether it was made at the time of the proposal or the marriage contract, based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: "Muslims are bound by their conditions, except for a condition that forbids what is lawful or permits what is unlawful." Conditions in marriage are either stipulated at the time of the contract or prior to it. As for gifts and financial amounts given during the engagement, they are gifts intended for marriage. If the rejection comes from the bride or her family, he has the right to annul the engagement and demand the return of what he paid. However, if the disinclination comes from him, he has no right to reclaim anything. The questioner is advised to proceed if the girl is religious and of good character and her family coerced her, and to expedite the marriage to her, then instruct her in what he desires, while trying to reach an understanding with her.
