What is the preponderant ruling concerning seeking prayers from others?

A Muslim's request for supplication from his Muslim brother is permissible and sanctioned, and this has been established in the Sunnah, such as the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The supplication of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is answered," and his request from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do not forget us, my brother, in your supplication."

If the one asking also intends to benefit the one being asked and for good to come to him, then he is emulating the Prophet (peace be upon him). However, if the intention is solely to benefit himself, then although it is permissible, it is better to refrain from it, as it falls under discouraged types of asking.
