The question

What is the best way to deal with my 14-year-old sister, whose behavior has changed negatively after puberty? She has started ignoring others, being abusive in her words and actions, disliking school, disobeying my mother and showing hatred towards her, preferring sleep and watching TV over everything else, rejecting my repeated advice regarding behaviors such as wearing pants or an abaya, and she is intensely jealous of me?

The answer

Your sister has committed many grave errors, such as disobedience to her mother, which is among the greatest of sins, and hatred towards her mother and siblings, as well as vulgarity, impudence, wearing pants, and watching immoral channels. You have done well in responding to her misdeeds with kindness, to her insults with silence, and by using Quranic verses and proofs to highlight her bad behavior. Allah the Almighty says: "And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that which is better; then suddenly that individual between whom and you was enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend." We advise you to continue with gentleness, forgiveness, turning away, and sometimes silence, in order to rescue your sister, along with supplicating for her and treating her with wisdom and good counsel.
