What is the ruling on one who reviles something pertaining to matters of religion – such as prayer, for example – while in a state of mood swings or anger, then regrets and feels remorseful and resolves to repent? Is repentance and remorse sufficient for him, or must he perform ghusl and utter the Two Testimonies anew?

If a person has lost his mind, then there is no sin upon him. Likewise, if what occurred was merely a fleeting thought in the heart that was not uttered. However, if he was sane and uttered insults against prayer or the rituals of religion, then this is apostasy. His repentance is accepted if he regrets and resolves not to return to it, and he must pronounce the two testimonies of faith. He is not required to perform ghusl (ritual bath) unless he committed something that necessitated it during his apostasy.
