Is it permissible to adopt the easiest fatwas if the fatwas of prominent scholars contradict one another?

In matters of ijtihad where اختلاف (disagreement) is permissible, a layperson may adopt any of the sayings of the scholars, unless they have the means to make a preferential judgment (tarjih). Adopting the easier opinion is preferred if there is an excuse due to need or necessity.
