What is the beneficial means to avoid sins and falling into prohibitions after following one's whims, so that a Muslim may preserve his religion and thereby avoid the trap of Satan?

Satan is keen to tempt the servant, and a Muslim must treat him as an enemy. There are many ways to escape his snares, including: being mindful of Allah and recalling His greatness when alone, not following the footsteps of Satan, repenting from sins and not persisting in them, remembering death and meeting Allah, seeking refuge in Allah through supplication, increasing in supererogatory acts after obligatory ones, and associating with the righteous while abandoning bad company.
