Is zakat due on non-local currency (dollar or the like)?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Zakat is obligatory on money, whether in local or foreign currency, if it reaches the nisab either by itself or when combined with other money or trade goods, and a full year has passed over it. The nisab is determined by the value equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver (whichever is more beneficial for the poor). The amount is calculated in total, including its principal and profits.
