How can a secret marriage be permissible, given that it entails the husband's deception, his absence from his home, his causing depression to his wives, and their lack of knowledge about the number of his other wives?

A husband is not obligated to inform his wives that he intends to marry. However, he must inform them after the marriage for the sake of equitable division and to avoid suspicion. The husband must fear Allah and be just among his wives in terms of financial support, housing, and overnight stays. Marriage with the intention of divorce is invalid and forbidden; it must be with the intention of permanence. Those who permit it for specific circumstances, such as being away from home, do not intend frivolity or exploitation of people's vulnerability. Legitimate marriage permits up to four wives, but its purpose must be to build a righteous family, not to satisfy a fleeting desire. Caution must be exercised against lying and injustice, and their negative effects on the wife, society, and Islam.
