Is it permissible to pray behind an imam who smokes, considering there are other imams who smoke in other mosques?

Smoking is Islamically forbidden due to its impurity and numerous health harms. The religious proofs for its prohibition include the Almighty's saying: "He makes lawful for them the good things and makes unlawful for them the evil things." As for a smoker leading the prayer, the best individuals should be chosen for imamate, and a disobedient person should not be appointed as an imam if someone else is available. Nevertheless, the preponderant opinion is that prayer behind a disobedient smoker is valid, although it is preferable and better to pray behind a just and righteous imam.
