Do I need to reallocate the money I used to build two wells through a charity organization after learning that it does not count as part of my zakat?
Zakat funds must not be spent on digging wells, building mosques, hospitals, or similar projects which do not provide possession to the poor and needy. This is agreed upon by the majority of scholars. Whoever does so believing it suffices as zakat must repay the obligatory amount and distribute it to its rightful recipients. Zakat funds must not be spent on bridges, drinking fountains, road repairs, shrouding the dead, or other charitable acts not mentioned by Allah as zakat expenses.
