How can one deal with shaking hands with Muslims in crowded streets?

Shaking hands is a virtuous act that is commendable in Islamic law and leads to the forgiveness of sins. It should be done if possible, but omitted if it causes embarrassment or hardship. In such a case, a Muslim should suffice with offering and returning greetings, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with one better than it, or [at least] return it [in a like manner]."
