Is it permissible for young children to pray in a garment that is above the knee, and what is the maximum age at which this is allowed for them?

The conditions stipulated by the jurists for prayer are divided into conditions of obligation and conditions of validity. Among these is the covering of the nakedness ( awrah ) when able. This is obligatory even if the person is in solitude or darkness, with something that does not reveal the skin.

The awrah of a male who has reached ten years of age and the awrah of a free discerning female (seven years of age) is what is between the navel and the knee. As for a child from seven to ten years old, his awrah consists of the two private parts. What is less than seven years old has no ruling concerning its awrah.

The entire body of a free adult woman is awrah in prayer, even her fingernails and hair, except for her face.

It is a condition for the prayer of an adult male to cover at least one of his shoulders, in addition to covering his awrah with some clothing.

If a boy or girl of seven years old prays in a garment that covers only what is between the navel and the knee, their prayer is valid. As for those younger than seven, if they pray with something above the knee and below the navel, or without clothing, their prayer is valid because their awrah has no ruling.
