Expiation is incumbent upon whoever breaks an oath, whether or not it was affirmed by placing a hand on the Qur’an, because swearing by the Qur’an is contrary to the . The expiation for an oath is feeding ten poor persons with the average food one feeds one’s family, or clothing them, or emancipating a slave. And whoever cannot afford that, then fasting three days.
