What is the ruling on audibly asking oneself, "Am I a disbeliever or a Muslim?" And does Allah forgive one who falls into disbelief due to intense obsessive whispers (waswasah) that lead him to near despair and sins? Among the wretched fruits of whispers (waswasa) are self-excommunication, alienation from God, and weakening of faith. The best cure for them, after seeking help from God, is complete disregard for them and engaging in acts of obedience such as prayer, fasting, and seeking sacred knowledge. Do not ask too many questions in this regard, as they only increase confusion, doubt, and whispering.
