Peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you. What is the ruling on consuming qat?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Scholars have differed concerning the ruling on qat. Some have prohibited it due to its harm to the body and mind, while others have not prohibited it due to their lack of proven harm. The accurate understanding is that they all agree on its prohibition if its harm is proven. Among its proven harms that lead to its prohibition are: occasional loss of intellect, decreased libido, weakened sexual ability, waste of money and time, and turning away from the remembrance of Allah and prayer. The World Conference on Combating Intoxicants has classified qat among prohibited narcotics. At the very least, it falls under doubtful matters which a Muslim should avoid.
