How do I sincerely ask for martyrdom in the cause of Allah?

Sincere supplication for martyrdom enables its supplicant to reach the ranks of martyrs, even if he dies on his bed, as 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did. Sincerity here describes the heart with a firm intention and a resolute determination, not merely words uttered by the tongue. This sincere intention is tested by the availability of a legitimate means to achieve it. So, whoever is truthful with Allah in his resolve, Allah will guide him to good. Among the signs of sincerity is preparing the appropriate and available provisions, which are of various types, including faith-based, knowledge-based, practical, and physical. The sincere person does not fall short in acquiring them to the best of his ability.
