Is it permissible to name someone "Safwan" in Islam?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There is no objection to naming a newborn "Safwan"; because the default rule for names is permissibility, and it means "smooth stone" in the Arabic language. A number of the Companions were named with it, such as Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal and Safwan ibn Umayyah.
