Sufyan is an Arabic name denoting lightness and swiftness of movement. It is derived from "the wind sifting the dust" (saft al-reeh al-turaab), and it is well-known with a dammah (Sufyān). Two great imams were named Sufyan: Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah and Sufyan al-Thawri. There is no harm in naming a child with this name, especially with the intention of seeking blessing through these two imams.
