Is what the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said about women true?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

This statement cannot be attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, for two reasons: First, it has no authentic chain of transmission in the books of Sunnah and narrations (athar). Al-Qurtubi quoted it, but the verifier could not find its source. Second, it excessively denounces and warns against women in an inappropriate manner, which would not emanate from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who knew the virtue of righteous women. As for narrations that generally condemn women, they are rejected, for women are the sisters of men, and among them are devout worshippers and believers.
