What is the meaning of the Hadith: "Love your beloved moderately, for he may become your hater one day; and hate your hater moderately, for he may become your beloved one day," and does it contradict love for the sake of Allah, and did the Companions act upon it?

Many scholars have deemed the hadith weak, while some have considered it good (hasan) or authentic (sahih) as a statement attributed to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The meaning of the hadith is sound, indicating a prohibition against exaggeration and excess in love. Love for the sake of Allah is among the best acts of closeness to Him, and the default is to think well of a Muslim. However, emotional impulsiveness is blameworthy if it oversteps its bounds. Moderation and balance are in accordance with Islamic law and yield tranquility of the soul.
