Is it permissible for a pregnant woman to postpone fulfilling her vow until after childbirth?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Scholars have differed regarding the obligation of fulfilling a non-time-specific vow (nadhr), whether it must be fulfilled immediately or can be delayed. The preponderant view is that it can be delayed, though hastening to fulfill it is better. There is no harm in delaying its fulfillment due to necessity or need. Therefore, there is no harm for a wife in delaying the fulfillment of her vow until she delivers her child, especially if fulfilling it would be difficult for her during pregnancy. As for a vow specified by a time, it lapses if its time passes due to an excuse such as illness, menstruation, postpartum bleeding, or travel, and its fulfillment is not then obligatory.
