Al-Qurtubi, in his Tafsir, indicates that the expansion of the chest for Islam means its widening and the adornment of its reward. The root meaning of "sharh" (expansion) is widening and clarification. As for the constriction of the chest, it means making it difficult, like a dense thicket or interwoven trees, such that wisdom does not reach the heart of the disbeliever, just as a shepherdess cannot reach a place dense with trees.
