What is the ruling on using the "fingers crossed" gesture, which means wishing for luck?

It is not permissible to cross one's fingers for good luck, as this imitates disbelievers in their veneration and seeking blessings from the cross. We have been forbidden from this, and one should only ask Allah Almighty for good fortune. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, detested the cross and would not leave anything with crosses on it without destroying it, as narrated by Al-Bukhari from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: "He would not leave anything in his house with crosses on it except that he would destroy it." And when Jesus, peace be upon him, descends at the end of time, he will break the cross, as narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, the son of Mary will soon descend among you as a just judge; he will break the cross, kill the pigs, and abolish the jizyah." Therefore, it is obligatory to beware of this forbidden act.
