The question

What is the ruling on participating in the "Achieve Your Dream" competition on MBC, which relies on sending text messages at a higher than usual cost? Is the participant sinful if they lose? Can their participation be considered charity for the winner? What is the ruling on the money won from it? And is it similar to collecting money for a specific person?

The answer

The aforementioned competition is forbidden by Islamic law because it is a form of gambling, as the participant is either a winner, receiving the prize, or a loser, forfeiting their money. The gambler is sinful merely by seeking to gamble. Calling for or participating in such competitions is forbidden, and naming them differently does not alter their forbidden reality. Whoever participated and won is obliged to spend the prize on the general welfare of Muslims, along with repentance. If the person is poor and needy, they may take from it what suffices their need.
