Scholars differed regarding Waraqa ibn Nawfal's companionship [of the Prophet]. Some mentioned him among the Companions and considered him the first man to believe in the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Others said that he was not a Companion, but he believed in the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and died during the period of revelation. Still others withheld judgment. The preponderant view is that he was a monotheist believer, but he is not counted among the Companions because he died during the period of revelation, after the Prophethood but before the Messengership. It was narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not revile Waraqa, for I saw him in Paradise."
