A woman recognizes purity by one of two signs: dryness, which is when a woman inserts a piece of cotton into the private area and it emerges clean, free of blood, yellowness, and turbid discharge. The presence of usual secretions does not matter. The second sign is the white discharge (al-qassah al-bayda'). Yellowness and turbid discharge are considered menstruation if they are connected to blood or occur during the usual period. If the bleeding stops and is followed by turbid discharge, the woman is still considered to be menstruating. If the turbid discharge ceases and she observes the aforementioned secretions, she has become pure.
