Can a guardian grandfather be compelled to hand over to the heirs their share of their deceased father's money?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The guardian of orphans must spend on them judiciously from their money, providing for their needs and investing their wealth for them. When they reach the age of accountability and their sound judgment is ascertained, their money is to be handed over to them. It is not permissible to give it to them before that, based on the Almighty’s saying: "And do not give the incompetent [sufahaa’] your wealth, which Allah has made a means of sustenance for you, but provide for them out of it and clothe them and speak to them words of uprightness. And test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage. Then, if you perceive in them sound judgment, release to them their wealth." Therefore, your grandfather must spend on your needs from your money, and whoever among you has reached sound judgment, he must hand over his money to him.
