Is a wife's prayer valid if the yellow discharge continues after forty days from childbirth, and is it permissible to have intercourse with her?
The maximum period of postnatal bleeding (nifas) is forty days. The woman in nifas should perform ghusl (ritual bath) and pray if the bleeding stops before forty days. This is what the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, unanimously agreed upon.
If the bleeding stops after forty days, she has become pure and must perform ghusl, pray, and fast. It is permissible for her husband to have intercourse with her, even if yellow discharge or secretions come out of her, due to the saying of Umm Atiyyah, may Allah be pleased with her: "We used not to consider the yellowish or brownish discharge after purity as anything."
However, if the bleeding continues after forty days: - If it coincides with her usual menstrual period before pregnancy, then it is menstruation, which prohibits prayer, fasting, and sexual intercourse until the period ends. - If it continues after that, then it is Istihada (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding), which does not prohibit anything. - If it does not coincide with her usual period, then it is Istihada bleeding, and she must perform ablution for each prayer, and it is permissible for her husband to have intercourse with her.
