What is the ruling on a man braiding his hair in Islam, and are there differing jurisprudential opinions concerning it?

Growing one's hair long is not a Sunnah for which a Muslim is rewarded; rather, it falls under customary practices. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, grew his hair long and also shaved it, and he commanded that it be honored. His hair, peace and blessings be upon him, reached his earlobes, and sometimes between his ears and his shoulders, and at times it touched his shoulders. When it grew long, he would make it into four braids. This matter is subject to custom and tradition. If growing hair long in a particular place is a sign of immorality or degradation, then it should not be done, based on his, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." In conclusion, growing hair long is permissible and follows the prevailing custom in society.
