Is tattooing permissible in Islam?

Tattooing involves puncturing the skin with needles and filling the punctures with kohl or other substances to change its color to blue or green. This is forbidden by the unanimous consensus of scholars. It has been reported on the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "May Allah curse the tattooers and those who get tattooed, those who pluck their eyebrows, and those who file their teeth for beauty, altering Allah's creation."
