How is kinship maintained? And is breaking off contact with relatives for more than three days considered severing ties of kinship, and is love a condition for maintaining kinship?

The Shari'ah encourages maintaining kinship ties and forbids severing them. It did not specify a particular method for this, but rather referred the regulation of it to custom (urf). Thus, whatever is considered kinship-maintaining by custom is considered so by Shari'ah, and whatever is considered severance is considered severance by Shari'ah. Maintaining kinship ties has degrees, and the lowest of them is refraining from abandoning and greeting. As for heartfelt love for relatives, one should strive for the causes that bring it about, but it is not obligatory, nor is one held accountable for its absence, because it is a matter of the heart beyond human capability.
