What is the ruling on one who died before the call of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab? Is he considered among the people of the Fatrah (a period during which no prophet was sent or divine message was proclaimed) and will he be tested?

What is attributed to the scholars of Najd regarding their ruling that everyone who died before the call of Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab belongs to the 'People of the Fatrah' (period of ignorance) is incorrect. The dispute revolves around those who committed an act of kufr (disbelief) while ignorant of the ruling. Some scholars of the Da'wah (call/movement) excuse the ignorant of the ruling due to the Hujjah (proof) not having been established against them, such as Ibn Uthaymeen. Others, like the sons of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, hold that whoever died upon shirk (polytheism) before the call reached them, and this was known about them, then outwardly they are considered disbelievers, and their affair is with Allah if the Hujjah was not established against them. The correct view is that whoever commits an act of kufr and the Hujjah has not been established against them, they are excused and are ruled to be Muslims, according to His, the Almighty's, saying: "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred." Many types of shirk may be hidden from some who have entered Islam, and they do not deserve punishment until the Hujjah is established against them, as stated by Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah.
