What is the ruling on the oath of continence (ila') from a wife before consummating the marriage with her?

The ruling on ila' (oath of abstinence) from one's wife before consummation is the same as its ruling after it, due to the generality of Allah's saying: "For those who swear to abstain from their wives is a waiting period of four months" (Quran 2:226). And ila' is valid for any Muslim or dhimmi wife, whether free or enslaved. This is the view of Al-Nakha'i, Malik, Al-Awza'i, and Al-Shafi'i.
