What is the meaning of Iyla’? May Allah reward you a thousandfold.
Ila' (the oath of abstinence) linguistically means: an oath. Islamically, it is when a man swears by Allah to his wife that he will not have sexual intercourse with her. She then waits for four months. If he has intercourse with her, he must make expiation for his oath. If four months pass before he has intercourse with her, the ruler gives him the choice between returning to her (fay') or divorce, according to the Almighty's saying: "For those who swear not to approach their wives is a waiting period of four months. So if they return [to them] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. And if they decide on divorce - then indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing."
