If you swore not to take the money and then took it, you have broken your oath and expiation () is incumbent upon you. Returning the money does not waive it. The expiation for an oath is in the order mentioned in the Qur’an: feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. And whoever cannot find [the means] – then a fast of three days. As long as you are able to feed [the poor], fasting is not sufficient for you. What is obligatory upon you is to feed ten poor persons, and the disbursement of the expiation becomes immediately obligatory.
