How can one repent from an interest-based loan taken to pay the price of a farm, and what is the optimal way to repay this debt? Is it better to resign in order to repay the debt, or to convert the loan to an Islamic bank and continue with the installments?
The borrower involved in usury is obligated to perform sincere repentance, which includes: regretting the sins, abandoning them, resolving not to return to them, and restoring any injustices. They are obligated to return only the borrowed principal, without the interest, if possible. If accelerating the repayment of the usurious loan leads to the cancellation of interest, then one should hasten to do so. Transferring installments to an Islamic bank does not change the fact that the loan is usurious. If the Islamic bank pays the loan amount and recovers it with an increase, this is not permissible due to the presence of both riba al-fadl (excess in quantity) and riba al-nasiah (excess due to delay).
