The answer

If the deceased leaves behind only the paternal grandmother and the father as heirs, then the grandmother receives one-sixth as her obligatory share, and the remainder goes to the father by virtue of being a residuary heir. This is according to the Hanbali school of thought. However, the majority of jurists (Maliki, Hanafi, Shafi'i, and another narration from the Hanbalis) hold that the grandmother is excluded by the father, and the entire estate goes to the father. The Hanbalis have based their opinion on a whose chain of narration some scholars have deemed weak, although Ibn Taymiyyah favored her inheritance in this case. It should be noted that inheritance matters are serious and complex, and require submission to courts to verify all rights and heirs.
