If they did not possess wealth, you are not obligated to pay the expiation on their behalf, though it is commendable to do so. You must begin by feeding or clothing ten needy persons. If you are unable to do so, then fast for three days, and it is permissible for the heirs to divide the fasting among themselves. It is not valid to transition to fasting unless one is unable to feed, clothe, or emancipate.
