What is the ruling on the marriage of someone who abandoned prayer if he returns to it, and what is the ruling on him being the guardian for the marriage contract of his daughter who is committed to prayer? And must his married daughters renew their marriage contracts? And how should a marriage proposal for a sister whose father does not pray be handled?

Abandoning the obligatory prayer is one of the gravest major sins. Some scholars have gone as far as to say that whoever abandons prayer is a disbeliever (kafir), but the majority opinion is that such a person does not commit disbelief that expels them from the fold of Islam if it is due to laziness and not a denial of its obligation.

Ibn Qudamah said: "There is a consensus among Muslims that one who abandons prayer is not treated as an apostate disbeliever. If he were a disbeliever, the rulings of disbelief would apply to him."

Accordingly, if someone repents and observes prayer diligently, their marriage is valid and does not require renewal. The guardianship of a Muslim father who has been negligent in prayer over his daughters is valid, and their father may marry off the woman as long as he is a Muslim. What is obligatory is to advise people and explain the great status of prayer.
