Are gifts sufficient atonement for stealing from family members in childhood and repenting, or is it necessary to confront them and ask for forgiveness?

One who steals while young, meaning before reaching puberty, does not incur sin. However, he is obligated to return the stolen item if it is still موجودًا (extant), or to return its مثل (like equivalent) if it is مثليًا (a fungible item), or its قيمة (value) if it is مقومًا (an item of fluctuating value). He is not obligated to inform the person from whom the item was stolen about the true nature of the theft upon returning it. Rather, it suffices for him to return it in the form of a gift or similar gesture, with the intention of restoring the right.
