Is it true what is rumored that Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr was stingy and ill-tempered?

The reports describing Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) as stingy have not been authentically transmitted, and the chains of narration through which these reports reached us are weak or include unknown narrators. In contrast, there are authentic narrations that praise him and commend his generosity. Even if we were to assume the authenticity of some of these reports, it is likely that they pertain to his actions concerning the funds of the public treasury as a ruler, where he was strict in their disbursement, rather than to his stinginess with his personal wealth. The actions of the Companions should be interpreted in the best possible light, for they are the best of people.
