Is it permissible for a person to abandon their family on the pretext of their distance from religion, believing that in abandoning them there is righteousness and uprightness for their own faith, and in being close to them there is corruption and deviation from the straight path?

Maintaining kinship ties (Silat al-Rahim) is among the greatest acts of nearness to Allah. One must advise negligent relatives and remind them of Allah. If advice proves ineffective, a distinction must be made between parents and others. It is never permissible to abandon one's parents, except in the case of disobedience (to Allah), and it is permissible to reduce interaction with them to avert religious trials (fitnah). As for relatives other than parents, there is no harm in abandoning or isolating oneself from them if their company causes religious trials or weakens one's faith.
