Scholars have differed regarding the acceptance of the testimony of a single woman concerning breastfeeding. The Hanbalis, along with Tawus, Al-Zuhri, and Al-Awza'i, held that her testimony is acceptable if she is trustworthy, citing the hadith of 'Uqbah ibn Al-Harith as evidence. 'Ata', Qatadah, and Al-Shafi'i disagreed, stipulating the testimony of four women. As for the اصحاب الرأي (scholars of opinion), they stated that only the testimony of two men, or one man and two women, is acceptable. The Malikis, however, maintained that the testimony of two women is acceptable. Those who denied the establishment of prohibition by the testimony of a single woman interpreted the hadith of 'Uqbah as being for recommendation (tanzih), not obligation.
