The question

What should I do with someone who has exposed my matter? And will the حد (prescribed punishment) for sodomy be applied to me? And what should I do for God to forgive me, after my repentance and regret for having fallen into the preliminaries of sodomy?

The answer

The preliminaries to sodomy are unanimously prohibited. Ibn al-Hajj al-Maliki mentioned three stages of sodomy, starting with looking and ending with committing the major abomination. Repentance from sin is accepted by Allah as long as it fulfills its conditions: abstaining, regretting, and resolving not to return to it. The act of the people of Lot is among the most feared dangers for the Muslim nation. The punishment for sodomy is severe in this world and the Hereafter, and there is no sin more corrupting than it. You are not required to seek the hadd punishment for the preliminaries to sodomy. You must conceal yourself, increase your seeking of forgiveness, and make the supplication: "O Allah, conceal my shortcomings, and soothe my fears."
