The question

What is the ruling on turning off the television for a mother who watches Turkish series that contain nudity and musical instruments? Is it permissible to do so despite her anger? If it is not permissible, what can be done, given that advice has been ineffective and she raises the volume of the television?

The answer

Congratulations on your commitment. You should advise your mother and gently explain the ruling to her. You are not obliged to turn off the device if she will turn it on and become stubborn, because a mother should be gently enjoined from evil. If she does not respond, she should be left alone, and a way should be sought to convince her to abandon the forbidden. Ahmad, in the narration of Yusuf bin Musa, commanded that one should enjoin good upon their parents and forbid them from evil. He also said, in the narration of Hanbal: If one sees their father doing something disliked, they should inform him without violence, abuse, or harshness in speech. Otherwise, they should leave him, for a father is not like a stranger.
