What are the major sins (Al-Kaba'ir) in Islam, how many are they, and what are the sins that necessitate Sharia-prescribed punishments (Hudud)?

Major sins are all sins and transgressions that are great and grave. Their degrees vary in terms of ugliness and gravity of the offense, the greatest of them being the seven destructive sins. The number of major sins cannot be confined, and scholars have differed on this, with some counting them as more than seventy. The criterion for a major sin is any sin for which a specific punishment is prescribed in this world, or a warning in the Hereafter of torment, wrath, or curse. Among the sins for which prescribed punishments are carried out are: intentional murder, reviling prophets, slander, drinking intoxicants, adultery, and theft.
